COS NAMED OLYMPIC GATEWAY AIRPORT

Colorado Springs Airport was tapped as one of four official gateway airports for general aviation during the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City.

All general aircraft (noncommercial private/corporate jets) flying into Salt Lake City during the Olympics must first land at one of the four gateway airports for a consensual pre-departure security check and inspection, according to the Utah Olympic Public Safety Command.

Dignitaries, Olympic corporate sponsors, kings of commerce and European royalty were among the passengers that landed at these four sites prior to arriving in Salt Lake. Joining Colorado Springs Airport as gateway facilities are Boise, Idaho; Las Vegas and Grand Junction, Colo.

An airspace restriction has been established around Salt Lake City and surrounding communities, The 45 nautical mile radius from Salt Lake International Airport will be in effect 24 hours per day beginning Feb. 8 and ending Feb. 24, 2002.

The 2002 Winter Olympics, scheduled from Feb. 8-24, will draw an estimated 3,700 athletes, officials from 80 nations and more than 70,000 visitors per day from around the world. The games will attract more than 15,000 members of the worldwide media and approximately one billion viewers will watch the games via broadcast.
